Getting Started with YAWC Online

This document describes how to set up and use YAWC Online to publish HTML web pages from Microsoft Word. The process is as follows.

  1. Download a default Word template from YAWC Online.
  2. Create a Word document using the template, and convert it to HTML using YAWC Online.
  3. Log in to YAWC Online as a demo user, and upload, convert and publish your Word document.

System requirements

YAWC Online requires that you have a Windows or Macintosh computer with Internet access, and a web browser and Microsoft Word installed.

YAWC Online does not install any software on your computer; however, we recommend that you download the YAWC Online Word template to assist the authoring process.

1. Download a Word template

This section describes how to download and install a Word template to assist the authoring process.

  1. Open Word, and select the command Tools>Options…. Choose the File Locations tab.
  2. Select 'User templates' from the File types list, click the Modify button, and press <Ctrl>+C to copy the directory path from the text field.
  3. In your browser, right-click on the Word template yawconline.dot, and select the Save Target As... command. Move the cursor to the beginning of the 'File name:' text field, and paste the template directory path into the field, and then click the Save button. The template will be saved in your Word templates directory.

2. Create a new Word document

This section describes how to create a new web page from scratch, using the yawconline.dot template and Microsoft Word.

  1. Open Word, and select select File>New…. Choose the yawconline.dot template. This will open a new document, with a short table at the top, and the word "Title" in bold.
  2. Save the new document to the location you require, e.g. C:\website\yoltest.doc.
  3. Replace the text "Title" with a real title.
  4. Write more text in the paragraphs following the title, and save the file again.

3. Upload and convert the Word document

  1. In your web browser, go to YAWC Online (http://www.yawconline.com/), and log in with username and password 'demo'.
  2. A form that allows you to upload a document is displayed. Click the Browse button to open a file selection dialog, select the Word file you saved, and click Open.
  3. Click the Upload and Convert button in the form to upload the file to YAWC Online for conversion. A new page will be displayed after the file is uploaded, while it is being converted. Conversion takes about a minute.
  4. A preview of the converted page appears in the bottom frame of the browser window, using the default demonstration HTML template. You can publish the page to the demo website (http://demo.yawconline.com/) by clicking the Publish button in the top frame, if you wish.

This is the basic process. See the YAWC Online User Guide for more details on how to mark up documents in Word to maximise the presentation and accessibility of the information.
